Personal Benefits of Volunteering

With that in mind, here are some of the personal benefits one can gain from volunteering:

Skill development

Always wanted to learn about sustainability and conservation methods? Volunteering helps you learn new skills, keep skills sharp, or use existing skills in new ways, and its kind of fun using your knowledge in ways to help out a great cause and promotion of the gun and shooting industry in the area

Career exploration

Regardless of your age or career level, volunteering will introduce you to new paths.

Volunteering can be an excellent way to learn more about a particular role or sector (particularly if you are coming from a for-profit job and hoping to switch to nonprofit or government), workplace or office culture, or cause.

Also, never underestimate the power of networking; volunteering offers the opportunity to cross paths—as well as, in many cases, quickly bond—with people from across your community, including many with whom you may otherwise not have had contact.

Personal growth

Lifelong learning includes hands-on experiences as a volunteer which can teach you about issues ranging from developing new shooting skills, learning how the business works, teaching others best practices that you have learned and was effective.

Need a break from your day-to-day life? Recharge by introducing adults and youth to shooting skills and disciplines they may not have been aware of before they came to BI State. or  helping plan for some of the many events Bi State hosts throughout the year. Need to work off some stress? Consider some of the more labor-intensive roles like helping to remove invasive species on our sporting clays course and helping in the removal of troublesome trees and bushes, also helping keep the grounds groomed to perfection with mowing and general clean up.

Lastly, don't forget that sometimes it just feels good to be valued; as a volunteer you can contribute unique skills, experiences, and perspectives. For example, you might be great at using online sites like MySpace and Facebook, twitter, and web site editing.

BI State is looking to branch out into marketing their services to the surrounding community through social networking and any method that will help connect with new audiences; as a volunteer, you can be the in-house expert to chair a committee and help them organize and get started.

Socialize

In addition to professional networking, volunteering can be a fun, meaningful way to make new friends. New to the community? Looking to branch out socially? Simply looking for something to do with new people? Volunteer and get to know others who  are gun friendly. Promote the ethical use of firearms and be an advocate to help promote the positives of shooting sports and explaining that all gun users are not the bad folks it is just a fun sport whether young or old it is very enjoyable and satisfying. If you train an 8 year old how to use a firearm in a shooting sport he can develop his new found skill all the way through collage, all the big 10 collages offer shooting sports in their curriculum and scholarships are awarded every year for the shooting sports. Shooting Sports is the safest sport offered in both high school and collages.

Have an impact

Last but most certainly not least, volunteering is one of the best ways we know of to make a difference in your community. Whatever your passion, however you get involved, volunteering offers a way to have a real and lasting positive impact on the lives of folks you come in contact with.
